Karla has worked in dentistry for 32 years. As is the case with many hygienists she first worked as a dental assistant beginning in military installments in Europe. She has taught oral hygiene as well as practicing dental assisting in all specialties of dentistry. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in dental hygiene from the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky in 1978 and has worked with Drs. Passero and Feeney for a cumulative total of 23 years.
In 1999, she completed a Master of Science Degree in dental hygiene at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. In addition to four days of private practice in Northern Virginia she holds a faculty position at the University of Maryland Dental School. She is affiliated with the Periodontics Department where she treats patients, supervises dental hygiene students in patient treatment and teaches classes to dental hygiene students. She has created a seminar for the Department of Periodontics. This seminar relates to delivering optimum patient care by interrelating the skills of the periodontist and the periodontal hygienist.
Meet Colleen Golenor
Colleen Golenor, RDH
Colleen grew up in the Pacific Northwest born into a “dental family”. Her father who practiced general dentistry in the state of Washington introduced her to dentistry.
With thirty years experience in the field, her love of dentistry has provided her with extensive experience in periodontics. Emphases on gum health and support structures for our teeth were priorities in the entire general dental and periodontal practices she has worked with.
She has initiated and participated in various study groups for hygienists in the Northern Virginia area since 1981. In conjunction with the doctors, they have had both in-house and external venue dental groups participate in seminars that are a part of study groups they have initiated.
“Giving back” is something she loves to do. Last April, Karla was a member of a 30-person medical/dental mission to El Salvador that attended to over 400 people in one week located in a village an hour west of San Salvador.
She is a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association, Virginia Dental Hygiene Association, Maryland Dental Hygiene Association and Academy of Osseointegration.
Colleen received her Bachelor of Science Degree in dental hygiene from the University of Washington in 1972. She is a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association and Virginia Dental Hygiene Association.
Due to travel related obligations with her husband’s work, Colleen has experienced many types of dental practices as they moved about the country. At one time, she held seven different state licenses. Now that the work related travel part of her life is complete Colleen and her husband have established residence in the Washington Metro area. We are so pleased to have her as part of our hygiene team.
